Quick question for the day trading community, does anyone know when day trading first started as a strategy? Im curious about the actual origin. Any insights or references you can shoot my way would be fab.

It blew up in the 1990s when home internet access became more of a thing and you started seeing these big discount brokers online. The dot com bubble helped too because you had loads of fast trades you could move in and out of in volatile tech firms.

It goes back longer than that Steve. In the 1800s/1900s the pros were using ticker tape machines in the NYSE in real time.

Then it really gained momentum when NASDAQ launched in 1971 as the first electronic stock exchange and again in the 1980s when Electronic Communication Networks (ECNs) made order execution faster.

Of course us retail traders were last to the race when the tech caught up and reall;y became available.
