Do you bother adding screenshots or chart images to your trading journal? Does it help with analysis or is it overkill?

I don’t want to spend hours maintaining my journal but at the same time I want to get value from it.

Hey, I add chart images with a quick annotation normally (if you don’t have add any commentary you can spend time trying to figure out your thinking when you come back to them further down the line).

Nope I don’t bother because I use excel.

As you said, I don’t want to spend hours capturing stuff that doesn’t tell me anything new or help me in my post trade analysis.

I didn’t even think about using excel to be honest.

People love the ‘snazzy new thing’ but I say if it ain’t broke why fix it? Excel has everything you need to capture the essentials of every trade.

Since technical analysis informs a lot of my trading decisions I often include screenshots from my charting platform. I find it’s useful to have them saved down somewhere anyway in case I want to refer back to them.

Journalling can be extremely useful, but not if it becomes time consuming and obsessive.

Have you looked into an automated journaling solution?

One popular example is TradeZella. Take a look at their YouTube videos and see what you think.

There are lots of other automated journaling apps, including free ones if you like the idea.

TradeZella looks like a neat solution and it works with MT5. The Trade Reply function sounds useful as well. I’m weighing whether it’s worth giving this a try.

The monthly fees aren’t too bad, so you can try it and see if it helps you without having to commit to a yearly subscription.
